CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro – The female population here received pampering on March 8, International Women’s Day, from Mayor Malou Flores-Morillo – this city’s first female chief executive.
The women were treated with free nail care, haircut, foot spa and massage on the occasion dubbed “Serbisyo Para kay Juana” held on the 3rd floor of the Calapan City College.
“Babae tayo, hindi babae lang (We are Women, not just Women). These are simple words but remind us that we, women, are an important part of the community. We have roles to play and to contribute to development,” said Morillo in a social media post on Wednesday.
As part of the 25-day celebration of the silver founding anniversary of this city, the Women’s Day observance themed, “Lakas ng Kababaihan, Lakas ng Lipunan,” was held at the Camilmil covered court which started with a motorcade led by Morillo.
At the venue, Ellaine Diomampo, the city’s special consultant on Gender and Development, gave a talk about “Safe Space Act, Gender-Based Sexual Harassments in Online Space and Gender Based Harassments in Work Place” and other concerns of women.
Morillo also invited the women to join the Purple Action Movement that will look after their welfare and rights, not only on Women’s Day, but all throughout the year.
The provincial government, on the other hand, observed Women’s Day through a mangrove planting activity on the coast of Barangay Mahal na Pangalan here, participated in by the Gender and Development Focal Point System Technical Working Group, and several department heads and village officials. (PNA)
